- A Smart Way to Reduce Food Waste: Don’t toss that slightly stale bread! This recipe thrives on day-old or slightly firm bread, making it an excellent method to use up loaves that might otherwise go to waste. Staler bread absorbs the egg mixture beautifully without becoming overly soggy, ensuring your French toast sticks maintain their desired structure and crispiness. Essential Ingredients for Perfect French Toast Sticks:
- Bread: While a thick-cut bread like Brioche or Texas Toast is often preferred for its ability to hold up well and create substantial sticks, nearly any type of bread can be used. Whole grain or even standard sandwich bread works wonderfully. For the best results, use day-old bread, as it’s less likely to become soggy. If your bread is very fresh, you can leave it out overnight to dry slightly.
- Eggs: Large eggs are ideal for creating a rich and effective batter that thoroughly coats each bread slice, ensuring a uniform golden-brown finish.
- Milk: The fat content of the milk contributes significantly to the richness and creaminess of your French toast. I highly recommend using whole milk for a truly indulgent flavor, but any milk you have on hand will work.
- Heavy Cream (Optional): For an extra layer of decadence and a more luxurious texture, consider adding a tablespoon of heavy cream to your egg mixture. It deepens the flavor profile and adds a lovely richness.
- Vanilla Extract: A touch of pure vanilla extract is crucial for elevating the flavor of your French toast, adding a warm, aromatic note that complements the other ingredients beautifully.
- Cinnamon and Sugar: This dynamic duo is tossed with the French toast sticks after air frying and is arguably what truly seals the deal for these delightful treats. While technically optional, the cinnamon-sugar coating provides that classic, irresistible flavor and a wonderful textural contrast.

Simple Steps to Making Air Fryer French Toast Sticks:
- Prepare the Bread: Begin by slicing your chosen bread into sticks. Depending on the width of your bread, you can cut each slice into thirds or fourths. Aim for pieces that are approximately 1 ½ to 2 inches wide to ensure they cook evenly and are easy to handle.
- Whisk the Egg Mixture: In a shallow bowl, combine the large eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Whisk these ingredients together thoroughly until they are well combined and smooth. This ensures an even coating on every piece of bread.
- Coat the Bread: Take each prepared bread stick and fully immerse it into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are evenly coated. Allow any excess egg mixture to drip off back into the bowl before transferring. This prevents the French toast from becoming overly saturated and soggy.
- Air Fry to Golden Perfection: Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper and lightly spray it with oil. This step is highly recommended as even well-oiled baskets can sometimes result in French toast sticking. Arrange the egg-coated bread sticks in a single layer in the basket, making sure they are not touching to allow for proper air circulation. You may need to cook in batches. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until each side is beautifully golden brown and crispy. Cooking times can vary based on your specific air fryer model, so keep an eye on them!
- Cinnamon-Sugar Coating: While the French toast sticks are still warm from the air fryer, gently toss them in a bowl containing your cinnamon-sugar mixture. Ensure each stick is evenly coated for that classic, sweet, and spiced flavor.
- Serve and Enjoy: Your homemade Air Fryer French Toast Sticks are now ready! Serve them immediately with your favorite toppings. Powdered sugar, fresh berries, a generous drizzle of maple syrup, or even a dollop of whipped cream are all excellent choices. Get creative and enjoy your delicious breakfast!

Expert Tips for Perfect Air Fryer French Toast Sticks:
- Know Your Air Fryer: Air fryers can vary significantly in their cooking power and heating efficiency. Some models cook much quicker than others. Always consider your specific appliance; if your French toast sticks aren’t as crispy as you’d like after flipping, give them another minute or two. Monitoring your air fryer closely, especially during the first batch, will help you achieve perfectly cooked results every time.
- Embrace Stale Bread for Best Texture: A secret to truly amazing French toast is using slightly stale bread. Bread that is a day or two old has less moisture, which allows it to absorb the egg mixture more effectively without becoming mushy. This results in French toast sticks that are wonderfully crispy on the outside and tender within, rather than soggy. So, if your bread is nearing its end, it’s the perfect candidate for this recipe!
- Mastering the Freezer for Future Breakfasts: These Air Fryer French Toast Sticks are incredibly freezer-friendly, offering a convenient grab-and-go breakfast option. To freeze them, first ensure they are completely cooled. Then, lay the sticks in a single layer on a baking sheet and place it in the freezer until they are solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container, where they will keep well for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply pop them into the microwave for about a minute on a microwave-safe dish, or for best crispiness, reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes until warmed through and slightly crispy again. This method also works wonderfully for items like banana oatmeal blender pancakes.
- Spice it Up: While cinnamon is classic, don’t hesitate to experiment with other spices in your egg mixture or cinnamon-sugar coating. A pinch of nutmeg, cardamom, or even a dash of pumpkin pie spice can add a delightful twist to your French toast sticks, catering to different flavor preferences.
- Perfect Dipping Sauce: Beyond maple syrup, consider serving these sticks with a variety of dipping sauces. Fruit compotes, warm chocolate sauce, a simple powdered sugar glaze, or even a creamy peanut butter dip can transform the experience and offer fun options for kids and adults alike.

Notes
- Air fryers are not all one in the same. Mine cooks and heats up very quickly. I find that even other recipes I have made in it cook several minutes quicker. When you flip them, if they are not crispy at all on the side facing up, you may want to wait another minute or so before flipping. Just keep an eye on your air fryer and all will be well!
- Using stale bread can really make amazing French Toast. I have tried this and it makes the French Toast less likely to come out soggy. So bonus if your bread is about to go, it should make the best sticks!
- You can freeze these Air Fryer French Toast Sticks so that they are ready when you need them. They will freeze for about 3 months. Pop them in the microwave for about a minute on a microwaveable dish. You can also pop them in the air fryer for a few minutes to re-heat.
