Why You Will Love This Easy BBQ Chicken Flatbread
This BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread isn’t just a recipe; it’s a culinary hero in several ways. Here’s why it’s guaranteed to become a new favorite in your kitchen:
- It’s a Leftover Champion: One of the greatest satisfactions in the kitchen is minimizing food waste. This recipe shines brightly here, offering a fantastic way to transform yesterday’s grilled or rotisserie chicken into a completely new and exciting meal. It’s incredibly rewarding to take what might otherwise go unused and craft it into something so utterly delicious. This flatbread makes meal planning easier and ensures every morsel of that delicious cooked chicken finds a purpose, saving you both time and money.
- Effortlessly Simple and Quick: We all crave delicious meals that don’t demand hours in the kitchen, especially after a long day. This flatbread delivers precisely that! From start to finish, you’re looking at an impressive under-30-minute turnaround time. That’s quicker than waiting for pizza delivery and infinitely more satisfying. Its simplicity makes it ideal for busy weeknights, last-minute gatherings, or when you just need a satisfying meal without the fuss. No complex techniques or extensive prep required – just straightforward, delicious cooking.
- A Delicious Canvas for BBQ Sauce Exploration: If you’re a true BBQ enthusiast, you know the world of BBQ sauces is vast and varied, with unique flavors from every region. This flatbread provides the perfect opportunity to experiment! One year, we dedicated our summer to trying over 25 different BBQ sauces, and this flatbread was our go-to vehicle for tasting. While I’m a loyal fan of classic Stubb’s Original for its balanced smoky-sweet profile, this recipe is incredibly forgiving and encourages you to explore. Whether you prefer a sticky-sweet Kansas City style, a vinegar-tangy Carolina sauce, or a fiery Texas-style blend, this flatbread allows each sauce to truly shine. It’s a fun culinary adventure every time you make it!
Essential Ingredients and Smart Substitutions
The beauty of this BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread lies in its flexibility and the accessibility of its ingredients. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need and how you can customize it:
- Naan Bread: This is my absolute favorite base for flatbreads. Its soft, pillowy texture crisps beautifully around the edges when baked, providing the perfect foundation for all the delicious toppings. Plus, it’s often readily available in many households, adding to the convenience. If you’re feeling ambitious and want to make your own flatbread from scratch, this homemade flatbread recipe is an excellent choice. Alternatively, you can use pita bread, lavash, or even pre-made pizza dough for a similar effect.
- Cooked Chicken: Shredded cooked chicken is ideal for this recipe. We frequently use leftover rotisserie chicken for its tender texture and pre-seasoned flavor, but cubed grilled chicken or roasted chicken works just as well. This recipe is fantastic for cleaning out the fridge, so use whatever cooked chicken you have on hand – breast, thigh, or a mix of both!
- BBQ Sauce: The backbone of this flatbread’s flavor! For classic and widely loved options in the U.S., Stubb’s and Sweet Baby Ray’s are excellent choices, offering reliable flavor. However, don’t hesitate to explore. Go for a spicy chipotle BBQ sauce if you like a kick, or a rich, sticky-sweet one for a milder profile. This is where you can truly personalize the flatbread to your preference.
- Ranch Dressing: This is the game-changer! Tossing the shredded chicken with ranch dressing adds an incredible layer of creamy, tangy flavor that beautifully complements the smoky BBQ sauce. For best results, I recommend shredding the chicken and tossing it with the ranch at the beginning of the day, allowing it to marinate and soak up all that deliciousness. You can use store-bought ranch for convenience or whip up your own homemade version for an extra fresh taste. If ranch isn’t your preference, a creamy blue cheese dressing could also offer an interesting twist.
- Mozzarella Cheese: While freshly shredded mozzarella melts more evenly and has a superior texture, pre-shredded varieties are perfectly acceptable for convenience. Don’t let a minor detail like this deter you from making this quick and delicious meal! You can also experiment with a blend of cheeses, such as cheddar, provolone, or a smoky gouda, to add more depth.
- Red Onion: A scattering of finely chopped red onion provides a wonderful crunch and a pungent bite that cuts through the richness of the BBQ sauce and cheese. It truly rounds out the flavor profile of the flatbread. For a milder onion flavor, consider using white onion or even caramelized onions for a sweeter note.
- Fresh Cilantro: This vibrant herb is not just a garnish; it adds a burst of fresh, herbaceous flavor that brightens the entire dish. Chop it finely and add as much as you like right before serving for maximum impact. If cilantro isn’t your favorite, fresh parsley or chives can offer a different but equally pleasant fresh element.

Simple Steps to Create Your BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread
Creating this delicious flatbread is incredibly straightforward. Follow these easy steps for a perfectly crispy and flavorful result every time:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly brush your naan or flatbread with olive oil. This crucial step helps create a wonderfully crispy crust, especially around the edges, making all the difference in texture. Place it on a baking sheet and pre-bake for about 3-4 minutes.
- While the naan is pre-baking, if you haven’t already, toss your shredded cooked chicken with the ranch dressing until it’s evenly coated.
- Remove the partially baked naan from the oven. Spread a generous layer of BBQ sauce over the surface, leaving a small border for the crust.
- Evenly distribute the ranch-tossed chicken over the BBQ sauce layer.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese generously over the chicken, ensuring an even coating. Then, scatter the chopped red onion on top.
- Return the flatbread to the oven and bake for another 7-9 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly, and the edges of the flatbread are golden and crispy.
- Once out of the oven, immediately cover with freshly chopped cilantro. For an extra flourish and burst of flavor, drizzle with a little more BBQ sauce and ranch dressing before slicing and serving. Enjoy your homemade BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread!

Expert Notes and Helpful Tips for Success
Achieving the perfect BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread is easy with these simple tips and considerations:
- The Secret to a Crispy Crust: Don’t skip the initial pre-bake of the naan or flatbread! Brushing it lightly with olive oil and baking for just a few minutes before adding toppings makes all the difference. This prevents a soggy bottom and ensures those delightful crispy edges that are, in my opinion, where the magic truly happens.
- Boost the Flavor with Garlic: For an extra layer of aromatic deliciousness, consider tossing some fresh minced garlic in with the chicken and ranch dressing. This adds a wonderful savory depth. However, if your cooked chicken is already well-seasoned, you might find this step unnecessary. Taste your chicken first and adjust accordingly!
- Dietary Adjustments: This recipe is incredibly adaptable. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative, whole wheat naan can be easily substituted for traditional naan. For those with gluten sensitivities, a gluten-free naan option can be used as the base, allowing everyone to enjoy this fantastic BBQ chicken flatbread.
- Make Ahead Option: You can prepare the ranch-tossed chicken mixture ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. This makes assembly even quicker when you’re ready to bake.
- Even Topping Distribution: Ensure you spread the BBQ sauce, chicken, cheese, and onions as evenly as possible. This guarantees every slice gets a balanced bite of all the wonderful flavors and textures.

What to Pair with Your BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread
This versatile BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread is perfect for almost any occasion. Whether you’re serving it as a main course for dinner or as part of an impressive appetizer spread, here are some ideas to complement its rich flavors:
For a Complete Dinner:
If you’re making this flatbread the star of your dinner, a fresh, vibrant salad is the perfect accompaniment. The crispness and acidity of a good salad will beautifully balance the savory richness of the flatbread. I highly recommend this refreshing Chickpea Avocado Salad, which pairs well with almost any meal. Another fantastic choice is the sweet and peppery Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad – just remember to skip the chicken if you want to keep it as a side dish!
For a Festive Appetizer Spread:
Appetizers are always best when served in a generous spread, inviting everyone to sample and share. This flatbread makes an excellent centerpiece, and a few complementary dips and finger foods will truly set a festive mood. Consider adding a bright and chunky Mango Avocado Salsa for a tropical touch, or some elegant Tomato Basil Skewers for a burst of fresh flavors. And for those who love a hearty snack, you’ll definitely want to include some savory Pulled Pork Nachos as well. Now we’re really talking party food! Oh, and don’t forget a batch of delightful Mozzarella Stuffed Turkey Meatballs to complete the ultimate party spread. Your guests will be raving!

BBQ Ranch Chicken Flatbread
A simple dinner or appetizer ready from start to finish in 20 minutes, this BBQ Chicken Flatbread is a great way to use up some leftover chicken in a delicious way. Chicken is tossed in ranch dressing to give an extra level of flavor unlike any BBQ chicken pizza around!
By: Lorie Yarro
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 3
Ingredients
- 1 naan bread
- 1-2 tsp olive oil
- 1/3 cup BBQ sauce
- 3/4 to 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded
- 2 T ranch dressing, plus more for drizzle
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese
- 2 T red onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Toss the shredded chicken with the ranch dressing and set aside. Lightly brush the naan with olive oil and place on a sheet pan. Bake for about 3 minutes. This will help make the flatbread crispier.
- Remove the naan from the oven and cover with BBQ sauce. Add the ranch-tossed chicken on top evenly. Cover with the mozzarella and then top with the diced red onions.
- Bake for 7-9 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the edges are crisp. Add freshly chopped cilantro and an extra drizzle of Ranch and BBQ sauce to serve.
Notes
- Pre-baking the naan for just a few minutes will make the edges all the crispier. That is where the magic is in my opinion.
- Toss some fresh minced garlic in with the chicken and ranch for some extra flavor. If your chicken is already seasoned, you more than likely won’t need it.
- For a healthier option, use whole wheat naan. For gluten sensitivities, a gluten-free naan can be substituted.
