Why These Protein-Packed Whole Wheat Donuts Are a Must-Try
These aren’t just any donuts; they’re a smart and delicious choice for anyone looking to enjoy a sweet treat without compromising on nutrition. Here’s why this recipe deserves a permanent spot in your kitchen:
- Nutrient-Rich Whole Grains: By using whole wheat flour, we’re adding fiber and essential nutrients to your breakfast. This provides sustained energy and contributes to a feeling of fullness, unlike traditional donuts made with refined flours. You get all the comfort of a donut with added health benefits.
- Greek Yogurt for Moisture and Protein: Greek yogurt is a powerhouse ingredient here. It acts as a natural tenderizer, ensuring your donuts are wonderfully moist and light. Beyond texture, it significantly boosts the protein content, helping you stay satisfied longer and supporting muscle health. It’s a fantastic way to subtly increase your protein intake at breakfast.
- Limitless Topping Potential: One of the best parts about making your own donuts is the freedom to customize. From classic sprinkles to sophisticated chopped nuts, crunchy granola, or even crushed cookies, the possibilities are truly endless. Let your creativity shine and design a donut that perfectly suits your mood.
- Incredibly Quick to Prepare: Who has time for complicated recipes on a weekday morning? Not us! This recipe is designed for efficiency. You can have these delectable donuts mixed, baked, and ready to enjoy in just about 30 minutes from start to finish. It’s faster than a trip to the donut shop, and arguably, much more rewarding.
- Baked, Not Fried: Ditching the deep fryer means less mess, fewer calories, and a lighter donut that you can feel good about. The baking process yields a cake-like texture that is both tender and satisfying, perfectly complementing the rich glaze.

Essential Ingredients for Your Delicious Whole Wheat Donuts
Crafting these delectable donuts requires a few simple, wholesome ingredients. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need and why each component is important:
- Greek Yogurt: The star ingredient for both moisture and protein. I typically use plain Greek yogurt, ranging from 2% to 5% milk fat, which yields fantastic results. If you prefer a more pronounced vanilla flavor, feel free to use vanilla Greek yogurt, adjusting the added vanilla extract as needed. The yogurt contributes to a tender crumb and a subtle tang that balances the sweetness.
- Whole Wheat Flour: For these donuts, I highly recommend white whole wheat flour. It offers the same nutritional benefits as traditional whole wheat flour but with a milder flavor and finer texture, making it ideal for baked goods where you want a lighter feel without sacrificing the whole grain goodness. Regular whole wheat flour can also be used, but the texture might be slightly denser.
- Egg: A single large egg binds the ingredients together, providing structure and richness to the donut batter.
- Milk of Choice: Any milk will work here – dairy or non-dairy. It helps to create the right consistency for the batter and adds to the overall moisture of the donuts.
- Brown Sugar: Brown sugar not only sweetens the donuts but also adds a lovely depth of flavor with its molasses notes. Its moist texture also contributes to the donuts’ tenderness.
- Cinnamon (Optional but Recommended): A touch of cinnamon enhances the warmth and coziness of the donuts, especially when paired with the chocolate glaze. Even if you’re glazing, it adds an extra layer of flavor that is truly delightful.
- Vanilla Extract: Essential for adding a comforting, aromatic sweetness that rounds out the flavors of the donut.
- Baking Powder & Baking Soda: These leavening agents are crucial for giving the donuts their light and airy texture, ensuring they rise beautifully in the oven.
- Sea Salt: A pinch of salt balances the sweetness and enhances all the other flavors in the donut.
- Oil: Just two tablespoons of oil contribute to the moistness of the donuts without making them greasy. A neutral-flavored oil like canola or vegetable oil works best.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Whole Wheat Greek Yogurt Donuts
Making these baked donuts is a straightforward process, perfect for bakers of all skill levels. Follow these steps for perfectly fluffy and flavorful donuts every time:

Prepping the Wet Ingredients:
- Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures your oven is at the optimal temperature for even baking as soon as your batter is ready.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the wet ingredients: the large egg, milk of choice, oil, vanilla extract, Greek yogurt, and brown sugar. Whisk these ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined and relatively smooth. Don’t worry if you see tiny specs of Greek yogurt; just aim for the smoothest consistency you can achieve. This ensures the flavors are evenly distributed.
Combining Dry and Wet:
- In a separate, smaller bowl, whisk together all the dry donut ingredients: whole wheat flour, sea salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Whisking them separately helps to evenly distribute the leavening agents and salt, preventing clumps in your final batter.
- Gently pour the dry ingredients into the bowl with the wet ingredients. It’s important to do this slowly and carefully to avoid a flour cloud!

Mixing and Piping the Batter:
- Stir the dry and wet ingredients together until they are just combined and smooth. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough donuts. A few lumps are perfectly fine.
- Now it’s time to get the batter into your donut pan! While you can spoon the batter, I highly recommend using an icing bag for a cleaner and more uniform donut shape. If you don’t have one, a large Ziploc bag with a corner snipped off works just as well. Place your icing bag into a tall glass and fold the top of the bag over the rim to create a wide opening. Spoon the donut batter into the bag.
- Twist the top of the bag closed to prevent spillage, and you can even secure it with a clothespin for extra neatness (a little trick I love!). Snip off a small tip from the end of the bag. Slowly and evenly squeeze the batter into the well-greased donut molds, filling each about two-thirds full. Ensure your donut pan is thoroughly greased, especially the center posts, to prevent sticking.
Baking and Cooling:
- Bake for approximately 12-14 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean. Keep a close eye on them, as baking times can vary slightly.
- Once baked, remove the donuts from the oven and let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before gently transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Cooling thoroughly is essential before glazing!
The Irresistible Chocolate Glaze: A Non-Negotiable Delight!
While the donuts themselves are fantastic, the chocolate glaze truly elevates this recipe from good to extraordinary. Seriously, please don’t skip it! A good chocolate glaze adds that classic donut shop appeal and an incredible layer of rich flavor that perfectly complements the wholesome whole wheat base. It’s the crowning glory of these protein-boosted treats.
To make the glaze, simply whisk together powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk of choice (adding more if needed for desired consistency), vanilla extract, and an optional pinch of salt. Aim for a consistency that is thick enough to coat the donuts but still pourable. For an extra rich and shiny glaze, you can melt a tablespoon of butter or coconut oil and whisk it in.
Once your donuts are completely cooled, it’s time for the fun part: dipping and decorating! I love topping my delicious Greek yogurt donuts with classic shredded coconut and colorful sprinkles for a playful touch. However, the world of toppings is your oyster! Feel free to go wild with your favorite additions:
- Chopped Nuts: Almonds, pecans, walnuts, or peanuts add a lovely crunch and nutty flavor.
- Crushed Cookies: Crushed Oreos, graham crackers, or shortbread cookies create a delightful texture and added sweetness.
- Granola: For an extra dose of healthy crunch and clusters of flavor.
- Mini Chocolate Chips: A simple yet effective way to add more chocolate goodness.
- Cinnamon Sugar: If you’re skipping the chocolate glaze, a simple toss in cinnamon sugar after baking is also delicious.
- Dried Fruit: Finely chopped dried cranberries or apricots can add a chewy, tart element.
Dip each cooled donut into the glaze, letting any excess drip off, then immediately adorn with your chosen toppings. Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving to prevent any sticky situations. The more glaze, the better, so don’t be shy about a double dip!

Expert Tips for Making This Donut Recipe Absolutely Perfect
Even though this recipe is simple, a few expert tips can ensure your Whole Wheat Greek Yogurt Donuts turn out perfectly every time:
- Don’t Overbake Your Donuts: Baked donuts cook much faster than you might expect. Overbaking is the quickest way to end up with dry, crumbly donuts. Start checking for doneness around the 10-minute mark. For my oven, 12 minutes was just right, resulting in a moist interior and a lightly golden exterior. A toothpick inserted should come out clean.
- Utilize an Icing Bag for Perfect Shapes: My absolute favorite trick for neatly formed, evenly shaped baked donuts is using an icing or pastry bag. As shown in the process photos above, simply place the bag into a tall glass, fold the top over the rim to create an easy opening, and pour your batter in. Snip off the tip, and you can precisely squeeze the batter into each donut mold. This method is not only much less messy than spooning but also ensures a professional-looking donut every time.
- Cool Completely Before Glazing: This tip is crucial and cannot be stressed enough. If your donuts are even slightly warm when you apply the glaze, it will melt, become runny, and slide right off. Allow your donuts to cool fully and completely on a wire rack before you even think about glazing. Patience here will be rewarded with a beautiful, set glaze.
- Glaze Generously (and Twice!): Once your donuts are cool, feel free to dip them into the chocolate glaze not once, but twice! Or, if you’re feeling extra indulgent, dunk them completely for full coverage. The more glaze, the better, right? Just ensure each layer has a moment to slightly set before dipping again, if doing multiple coats.
- Grease Your Donut Pan Thoroughly: To avoid any heartbreak, make sure your donut pan is very well greased. This includes the entire surface of each mold, especially the center post. Using a non-stick spray or a bit of butter/oil applied with a pastry brush works wonders. This ensures easy release and perfectly intact donuts.
- No Donut Pan? No Problem!: Don’t have a specific donut pan? You can still enjoy these delicious treats! Simply use a mini muffin tin. Fill the muffin cups about two-thirds full and bake for a slightly shorter time (around 8-10 minutes). Once cooled, glaze them just like you would the donuts. They’ll be mini donut muffins, equally delightful!
Storage and Make-Ahead Options
These whole wheat Greek yogurt donuts are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored to savor later. Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. If your kitchen is particularly warm, or if you prefer them slightly firmer, you can refrigerate them. For longer storage, you can freeze unglazed donuts for up to 1 month. Thaw them at room temperature, then glaze and enjoy! The glaze can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for a few days, then gently reheated or brought to room temperature and whisked until smooth before use.
Creative Variations to Explore
Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, feel free to experiment with different flavors and twists:
- Lemon Zest Donuts: Add 1-2 teaspoons of lemon zest to the donut batter for a bright, citrusy flavor. You could even make a simple lemon glaze with powdered sugar and lemon juice instead of chocolate.
- Spiced Donuts: Incorporate additional spices like nutmeg, cardamom, or allspice along with the cinnamon for a warmer, more complex flavor profile.
- Nut Butter Glaze: Instead of chocolate, create a simple glaze using powdered sugar, milk, and a tablespoon of peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter.
- Coconut Donuts: Add a quarter cup of shredded coconut to the batter and use coconut extract instead of vanilla. Top with toasted coconut flakes.
- Pumpkin Spice Donuts: During autumn, add 1-2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice to the batter and use pumpkin puree in place of some of the Greek yogurt for a seasonal treat.
I was planning on closing this post up with something like “Donut miss out on these…” or some sort of play on the word ‘donut’ but I think it may be better to just pass on that one for today. Anyway, I truly hope you enjoy these wholesome and delicious Whole Wheat Greek Yogurt Donuts. They’re a fantastic way to enjoy a classic treat with a healthier twist. Notes
- These donuts bake up quicker than you think. Don’t over bake them if you can help it. 12 minutes was just right for me!
- My favorite trick is to use an icing bag to form the donuts nicely in the donut pan. Place the bag in a glass and pour the batter in. Then cut the tip off and squeeze the batter into the donut pan. This makes for much less mess.
- Make sure the donuts are fully and completely cooled before glazing. Trust me on this one. Also, you can, and it is advised to dip the donuts twice or dunk them completely in the glaze so that the entire donut is covered. I mean, the more glaze, the better!
- Grease the donut pan very well. You want to make sure the center part is greased as well. No one wants only half the donut coming out of the pan!
- No donut pan? Make mini muffins and glaze them!
