Chronicles for Eli

Today should have been a day filled with unparalleled joy, marking the moment my husband and I would finally meet our baby. Instead, this day has transformed into a profound marker of grief, a date I have been quietly dreading for months. While we bid farewell to our sweet Eli long ago, this specific day solidifies the painful reality that he will not join us here on earth. It intensifies a sorrow that whispers constantly in my thoughts, contrasting what should have been with what tragically is. Not a single day has passed without my heart aching for him. He departed far too soon, yet he remains an indelible part of my soul, an integral piece of who I am, and an eternal member of our family.

A Day of Remembrance: Navigating Grief and Honoring Our Lost Angels

The journey through pregnancy loss is often a solitary one, shrouded in silence. Society frequently expects us to endure this profound heartbreak in isolation, to sweep our entire world of loss under the rug. The unspoken rule suggests that expectant parents should remain silent about their pregnancy until the ‘safe’ 12-week mark, primarily to avoid the uncomfortable and painful conversations if the baby doesn’t survive those crucial early months. One day, you are vibrant with the miracle of life unfolding within you, and the next, it is gone, with the world expecting you to resume life as if those two pink lines never appeared. These societal norms, though prevalent, are ones I refuse to accept for my precious babies. I simply cannot. I will not pretend they never existed. We are the parents of two angels we never had the chance to hold on earth, and their existence has irrevocably changed me. They marked this world and left an imprint on my heart that time will never erase.

Breaking the Silence: Why We Must Talk About Miscarriage and Stillbirth

As this significant date drew near, an overwhelming need to connect with others who shared my struggle consumed me. I yearned for a book, a collection of stories I could weep over, narratives of those who had lost their everything and found a way to pick up the pieces, for I desperately needed a beacon of hope. My search led me to a bookstore, where I was met with disheartening reality: there was no dedicated section for pregnancy loss or miscarriage. While online retailers like Amazon offered lists, I imagined that surely amidst the parenting, self-help, or women’s health sections, I would find something tangible. But the thought of approaching an associate, of having to articulate my pain and potentially break down in tears, was too much. I left, my hands and heart empty.

This experience only amplified my recurring questions: Why is this topic so rarely discussed? Why aren’t our babies, whose lives, however brief, were so real, given the voice they deserve? Why do we, as grieving parents, feel so isolated in our sorrow?

The conversation around pregnancy loss slowly began to shift when Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, and his wife bravely shared their story of expecting their fourth child after experiencing multiple miscarriages. They openly discussed the profound loneliness and pain of the process, highlighting how the lack of dialogue surrounding miscarriage only intensifies feelings of isolation and distance. Their story resonated deeply because, as they pointed out, so many individuals experience this loss, yet the essential conversations simply aren’t happening.

“Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you — as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own,” (Mark Zuckerberg)

My Journey Through Loss: Eli and Josie, Forever in Our Hearts

The loss of Eli shattered my world completely. Having already experienced the heartbreak of losing our first baby, Josie Florene, I was convinced, in my naive hope, that such a tragedy could not possibly strike twice. Yet, it did. From the very moment those two pink lines appear on a test, your baby becomes your absolute everything. Everything that came before seems to fade, and every decision thereafter is shaped by the miraculous life growing within you. Regardless of how many weeks or months you are pregnant, the undeniable love of a mother blossoms instantly and fully. Our babies are ours forever, no matter how brief their time with us on earth.

I never had the privilege of holding my babies in my arms, nor did I hear their first cries. There is no nursery decorated in anticipation, no physical belly to showcase their presence in my life. Yet, they are my babies. And my babies are not alone in their silent departure. Countless other parents experience the joy of a bursting heart, only to face the crushing sorrow of their child leaving this world before ever being embraced. It is imperative that their stories are told. We must not move forward in quiet solitude. We must not allow ourselves to be distanced from others who understand this pain. We do not have to struggle alone; it doesn’t have to be this way for any of us.

Letters to My Angel: A Mother’s Unwavering Love and Grief

As this poignant day approached, I found solace and a measure of healing in a new ritual: writing letters to Eli. I needed a tangible way to process my overwhelming pain, and these heartfelt conversations continued to validate his reality, reminding me that he lives on in my heart. Most importantly, I needed validation that I am a mother, a feeling that has been a profound struggle throughout these losses. Today, on the very day I should be holding my little miracle, I want to share some of these letters with you. My deepest desire is for Eli to feel as real to you as he is to me, for his story to be heard, and for the world to know the boundless love I carry for my angel.

My Sweet Angel, Eli

My Sweet Eli,

Why? That single word seems to be the only question my heart can form these days. Why? Why are you not here with us? Why does this pain cut so deeply, consuming every fiber of my being? Why were you taken from me, from us, so soon? From the instant I knew you were growing within me, my love for you was absolute, unwavering. You were here, a vibrant promise, and then, in a blink, my entire world was gone. When you were with me, I felt complete, purposeful. Now, in your absence, a profound loneliness blankets my days.

Nothing in this life made me happier than being your mommy. Nothing imbued my existence with more profound purpose – well, aside from being Josie’s mother, of course, my sweet angel already in heaven. You brought a smile to my face and a glow to my spirit that I had never known before. I walked taller, felt more vibrant, and even amidst the exhaustion of pregnancy, I found renewed energy each day. You truly brought me to life, inspiring me to be the best version of myself. You made my body even more beautiful, transforming it into your sacred home for a time. What an extraordinary gift you bestowed upon me, my love. I carry you in my heart always.

xoxo,

Mommy

A Mother’s Apology and Unspoken Truths

Dear Eli,

I am so deeply sorry. I’m sorry that I only had the privilege of feeling your presence here with me for such an agonizingly short time. I’m sorry that I wasn’t always the parent I dreamed of being for you, even in thought. I’m sorry for the moments I failed to acknowledge you openly as my baby, my son, simply to avoid the pitying glances, the unbearable pain of recounting your story, or the gnawing feeling of not being ‘good enough’ or a ‘true’ mother in the eyes of the world. I’m sorry for the times when asked if I have children, my lips would form the word “no,” because it felt easier than collapsing in tears before a stranger. I’m sorry for the profound loneliness I often felt, aching to talk endlessly about you and all you mean to me, yet remaining silent, wondering, ‘Who am I to the rest of the world?’ To them, I have no tangible proof, no precious bundle to hold and show, to validate my identity as a mother. I cannot present you to everyone, cannot pass you around for them to touch, to squeeze, to marvel at how beautiful, how tiny, how absolutely perfect you are. I know all these truths, and yet, I often kept them locked within myself.

From the moment you became a part of our family, my yesterdays faded into a different lifetime. Nothing else truly existed. It was just you, me, your daddy, and our sweet angel already in heaven, Josie. Nothing else mattered with the same intensity. You were our everything. You ARE our everything.

The day I discovered you had slipped away from us to join your sister, a part of me died that day. I genuinely believed there was no way I could survive without you. We had already lost our precious Josie; the thought of losing you too was an unbearable cruelty. I would have done anything, absolutely anything at all, to keep you here with us, safe in my arms. My love for you transcends all boundaries.

I love you,

Mommy

Celebrating a Life Unlived: On Your Due Date

Eli,

Today, this very day, I should be meeting you for the very first time. I’ve known you so intimately over these past almost forty weeks, feeling your presence, imagining your growth. But the dress rehearsal should be over now, and opening night, your debut, should finally be here.

We should be basking in the happiest day of our lives, celebrating the beginning of yours, and fundamentally, the very first day of what I was truly meant to live for. I should be holding you close, feeling your soft skin against mine, showing you the boundless warmth and security that I promised to give you each and every day of your life.

I often imagine your tiny little toes, your perfect little fingers. You are perfect, absolutely perfect in every detail. I wish with an intensity that physically aches, that you were here right now. It hurts so deeply. I try to remind myself that you are in a better place, a place of peace, but my human selfishness yearns for you right here, in my arms. I don’t want to wait an entire lifetime to hold you again. We should be celebrating your birthday today, your special day. And though you are not here, I promise to continue celebrating you each and every day, always. My heart holds you close.

I miss you so much, my sweet boy.
